Bring a photo and paint whatever you wish!

Students bring their own supplies.

The first 30 minutes of each session is “lesson” time, and the remainder of class will be spent painting.

The outline below are things we’ll always touch on, but I will share many other things like additional tools such as palette knives, sponging, textures, ink and more!


  • Lesson 1 – Getting Started
    • Items you need for Painting in Class or at Home.  (Handout.)
    • Paint your background. 
    • Skim dry and sketch your subject with chalk.

Instructor Demo – The importance of a foundation and painting a background.

  • Lesson 2 – Mixing Colors & Texture
    • Primary colors:  Red, Blue, Yellow
      • Secondary colors:
      • Red + Blue = Purple
      • Blue + Yellow = Green
      • Yellow + Red = Orange
      • Hue = pure color Red
      • Tint = adding White
      • Tone = adding Grey
      • Shade = adding Black
      • Texture
      • Purchase pre-made paste/medium or make your own using spackle and Elmer’s glue. 
      • Purchase wrapping tissue paper and use a medium to adhere to your canvas.  May be applied at any time (over/under paint.)

  • Lesson 3 – Values
    • Values and what that means.  Why the importance? 
    • Tip: take a photo next to your painting; change the photo to black & white to compare Values.

  • Lesson 4 – Sealing/Varnishing a Painting, Frames, Wiring
    • Discussion of varnishing:  Matte, Satin, Glossy.
    • Discussion of frames
    • Discussion of wiring
